falling deeper. I wanted a way out.
I was often hospitalized, and it was on one of my weekly or monthly visits to the emergency room in 1974 or 1975 that Mike read in a medical journal about a study with laboratory-induced seizures in rats that had been successfully treated with marijuana. You can imagine our skepticism. Neither of us could quite believe that marijuana would be the answer, especially since the expensive neurosurgeons I saw so often couldn’t find one.
But, of course, we decided to try it, and it wasn’t long before we began to see the difference. I began to see the “epileptic” part of myself differently. We carefully monitored my marijuana intake, and tried to apply the use of it in a very regulated manner. I would try a certain number of joints or puffs, and record the results. I always carried a rolled “joint” in my pocket, and I used it to ward off seizures when I felt an aura. I took it a number of times each day, and carefully tracked that information. Soon we found that I could keep the seizures at a distance by maintaining a certain amount of marijuana in my body. This was the mid-seventies, and besides this one study, there was no other research available. But what happened was amazing, and I became convinced by the miracle of my own experience.
